What are competency based interviews?
Competency based interviews are the primary style of the human resources part of interviews used in airlines. The are used so that the interviewee can demonstrate certain behaviors/skills they possess. You will be asked to give an example of a task or situation that led you to taking a course of action. Your answer will generally be marked with a maximum of 4 points attainable.
Therefore you should structure your answer using the STAR model which will attain 4 points each for:
- Situation – describe the situation you were in.
- Task – what did you have to do.
- Action – what action did you take and why. What were the challenges at hand.
- Result – what was the end result/outcome.
If you miss one of the above from the STAR format you will not be given the maximum 4 points. Practice is essential to achieving comfort with delivering a STAR format answer. Pilot IP recommends having at least 2-3 examples for every core competency expected at interview.
Example questions:
- Can you give an example of a time you influenced a colleague to adopt to your way of thinking?
- Give an example of when your communication skills were tested.
- Have you ever not delivered at a deadline and what did you do?
- Describe a time where you went the extra mile for your organisation or community.
- What elements of flight training did you find the most difficult and how did you overcome these difficulties?
- Have you made any decisions that have been ultimately unpopular?
Direct entry candidates
Direct entry pilot positions are very sought after and extremely competitive.
The process generally involves multiple stages which may include some or all of the following depending on the airline: Curriculum Vitae review, telephone and/or video interview, aptitude tests, group interview and final interview.
